2001: A Space Odyssey put its year on the poster, which takes a specific kind of nerve: the film has to be introduced by the date it is betting on, for as long as anyone talks about it. 33 years was the reach — far enough for a Jupiter mission, near enough that the first audience could reasonably expect to buy a ticket to the real thing. Clarke and Kubrick were not writing about a distant century. They were writing about the year their own children would be middle-aged in.
Run the same reach from 2026 and the film needs retitling. 2059: A Space Odyssey — and something goes out of it immediately. The new number is far enough away to be somebody else’s problem, which is exactly what the original refused to be. The title was a deadline. Nobody sets a deadline they do not expect to be around for.
