If Grand Theft Auto: Vice City were made in 2026, it would be set in 2010.
The short answer
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was released in 2002 and set 16 years earlier, in 1986. Made in 2026 instead, the same reach backwards would have Rockstar rebuilding 2010 — with the radio stations to match.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, in 7 facts
The setting is a year and a place at once: 1986, in a city based on Miami. The team watched Miami Vice throughout development and took the rest from Scarface. Source
It sold 1.4 million copies in two days, the fastest-selling game in history at the time, and finished as the best-selling game of 2002. Source
By March 2008 it had sold 17.5 million units across all platforms, 14.2 million of them on the PlayStation 2 alone. Source
The period is carried mostly by the radio: more than 113 songs and commercials across the in-game stations, released by Epic Records across seven albums. Source
Rockstar North built it on the RenderWare engine in an eighteen-month production, then shipped it on Windows in May 2003 and Xbox that November. Source
The borrowing is street-level. Vice City's Ocean Drive is modelled on the real Ocean Drive, and the fictional Vice City Tower on the Miami Tower from Miami Vice's title sequence. Source
Rockstar cast the actor who played Tubbs in Miami Vice as one half of the game's central duo, and put Jan Hammer's "Crockett's Theme" on Emotion 98.3. Source
The point
What the shift reveals
The other nostalgia pieces here reach for a year. This one reaches for a television channel.
16 years is a specific kind of distance in entertainment: long enough for the clothes to be a costume, short enough that the source material is still on tape in somebody’s house. Rockstar did not research 1986 so much as re-cut it, from Miami Vice and Scarface and a licensing deal — and because the period is delivered by radio stations you choose between, the player assembles their own 1986 rather than being shown one.
That is why the recalculation is uncomfortable rather than neutral. Point the same 16 years at 2026 and the target is 2010: a year with its own Miami crime television, its own excessive cars, and camera-phone footage of all of it. The remake would be easier to make and far worse to look at, because the period would arrive as evidence instead of as somebody’s memory of a title sequence.

Questions people ask
- What year is GTA Vice City set in?
- 1986, which is 16 years before the game was released and 40 years before now.
- What year would Vice City be set in if it were made in 2026?
- 2010. Rockstar reached back 16 years, so the same reach from 2026 lands there instead.
- Is Vice City based on Miami?
- Yes, and specifically on Miami as television shot it. Ocean Drive and the Vice City Tower are both taken from real locations that appear in Miami Vice.
- Why does Vice City have so much licensed music?
- Because the radio does the period work. More than 113 songs and adverts run across the in-game stations, which is how the game dates itself without a caption.
