What the shift reveals
The thirty-year gap was never arbitrary. In 1985 it put Marty in the exact year his parents were seventeen, which is the whole engine of the plot: a teenager meets his mother and father as peers and finds them unrecognisable.
What the film also got, free, was contrast. 1955 looked nothing like 1985. The cars, the diner, the clothes, the music, the town square before the mall — every frame did expository work without a line of dialogue.
Run the same arithmetic from 2026 and the plot survives intact. The visual joke does not. 1996 is close enough to now that a teenager dropped into it would notice the phones and very little else. The period comedy that carried half the film would have to be rebuilt out of something subtler.
Which is the quiet finding here. The gap is a constant. What 30 years looks like is not.
