Recalculated for 2026

Television2007Set in the recent past

If Mad Men were made in 2026, it would open in 1979.

The short answer

Mad Men premiered in 2007 and opened 47 years earlier, in 1960. Made in 2026 instead, the same series would reach back the same distance and open in 1979.

The arithmetic

What year would Mad Men be set in if it were made in 2026?

Same length, moved along. The gap is fixed at 47 years — only the window it is measured from moves.

Mad Men, in 7 facts

The pilot script is older than the show by seven years. Weiner wrote it in 2000 while working on the sitcom Becker; David Chase read it in 2002 and hired him onto The Sopranos on the strength of it, and it sat unmade until after that job ended. Source

  1. HBO wanted the show but wanted David Chase as an executive producer, which he declined; Showtime passed. AMC took it, and it became both the network's first original scripted series and the first basic-cable series to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. Source

  2. It won Outstanding Drama Series four years running — 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 — and took 16 Emmys in all from 116 nominations. Source

  3. Its first season won a Peabody Award, whose citation called it an account of "American culture sliding into the 1960s, holding by fingernails onto the attitudes of the post-WWII 1950s". Source

  4. The setting moves. Seven seasons carry it from March 1960 in the first episode to November 1970 in the last, so the gap this page measures is the one the show starts from, not the one it ends on. Source

  5. The opening titles, made by Imaginary Forces, are a deliberate nod to Saul Bass's skyscraper titles for North by Northwest. Source

  6. In March 2015 the production handed more than fifty objects to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, among them Don Draper's grey suit and fedora, Betty's yellow housedress, and a full script for the first-season finale. Source

The point

What the shift reveals

Nostalgia television usually reaches back about twenty years — far enough for the clothes to be funny, near enough that most of the audience were there. Mad Men reached back 47 years, which is a different proposition altogether. Almost nobody watching in 2007 had worked in that office. They had only heard about it.

That is exactly why the show could be so cold. A drama about the recent past has to flatter the people who lived through it, because they are sitting on the sofa holding the remote. A drama about 1960 at 47 years remove owes nobody anything, and Weiner spent seven seasons spending that freedom: the drinking, the smoking, the casual cruelty, none of it softened for anybody’s memory of their father.

Move the window to 2026 and the same reach opens onto 1979 — still inside living memory for plenty of viewers, still far enough that the office would have to be built rather than remembered. The distance is what does the work here, not the decade. Any year at 47 years would let a writer be that unsentimental about it.
