Most films that name a year name a distant one, because a distant year cannot be checked. Terminator 2: Judgment Day named a close one. 6 years is not a prophecy, it is a countdown — short enough that the first audiences could expect to be around for it, which is precisely what made a date on a screen feel like a threat rather than set dressing.

The bill for that came due on schedule. A film set 6 years out has 6 years before the world can start marking its homework, and this one failed the test in public. The franchise’s answer was to reopen the calendar: Judgment Day was rescheduled, then rescheduled again, until the date stopped meaning anything and only the event survived.

Reset the clock and 2032 inherits the same problem. Close enough to frighten anyone, close enough to be wrong in front of them. The reason the 1997 in this film still stings, and the 2029 war does not, is that only one of the two has had to face an audience that knows how it turned out.
