The strip was titled "Buck Rogers, 2429 A.D." at the start, and the date in that title changed with the calendar — the setting staying, as the Daily Cartoonist puts it, "exactly 500 years in the future". Source
In the strip's own telling, Buck is sealed in an abandoned mine near Pittsburgh by a strange gas, and awakens and emerges from it in 2429. Source

What the shift reveals
This site’s whole premise — that the gap is the real fact and the year is a by-product — was not an idea anybody had about old fiction. It was an editorial policy, and it is nearly a century old.
The strip put its setting in the masthead and then kept the masthead honest. If the reader is living in one year, Buck lives 500 years further on, and the number over the panel says so. Nothing about the fiction required this. It would have cost nothing to fix the date and let it age, the way almost every work here did. Somebody decided instead that the distance was the promise being made, and that a promise you have to keep re-honouring is worth more than one you made once in 1929.
Which leaves this page in a strange position. Everywhere else, 2526 is a hypothetical the site constructs. Here it is just the answer, computed the way the strip computed it, by people who worked out before almost anyone that a future has a shelf life unless you agree to keep moving it.
