The famous shot is an argument about time that the film has already made in numbers, an hour earlier, and much more quietly.
By the time Taylor reaches the beach he has known the date for the whole picture. He read it on the instrument panel while the ship was still sinking. The number meant nothing to him — 2,010 years is not a duration a person can hold — and so he behaved for two acts as though he were somewhere else rather than somewhen else, treating the planet as a navigation problem. The ending does not give him new information. It gives him a scale he can finally feel, and it is a piece of architecture, not a figure.
That is the useful thing about recalculating it. 4036 is a correct answer and a useless one, and it fails in exactly the way the chronometer failed Taylor.
