Wells did not choose an enormous number to be impressive. He chose one to put an argument beyond argument.
A reach of 800,806 years cannot be wrong about a date. What it can do is change the category of the claim, and that is the trick: the Eloi and the Morlocks are the drawing room and the boiler room, given eight hundred millennia to finish separating. A century would have implied politics, something a reader might vote about. Eight hundred thousand years implies biology, which nobody can canvass against.
So the recalculation returns 802,832 and changes nothing, and the nothing is the interesting part. Every page here works because the window moves while the gap holds still. This is the one where the gap is so much larger than the window that the window vanishes — 131 years of real history disappearing into a rounding error. It is the only future on the site that cannot be dated by how long ago somebody imagined it.
